EASE Focus 3 - Universal Sound System Modeling in 3D

EASE Focus 3 is an acoustic simulation program for 3D modeling of line arrays, sub arrays, digitally steered columns and conventional loudspeakers. Thanks to the support from major loudspeaker manufacturers, EASE Focus 3 is free software for the end user. Based on AFMG’s leading simulation software EASE, this concept made it possible to implement a broad scope of features and functionality.

  • Simulate line arrays, column speakers, point sources, and sub arrays
  • Define audience areas, section views, and receiver locations flexibly
  • Calculate sound coverage and frequency response immediately
  • Use systems of different manufacturers within one project
  • Use FIRmaker optimization to compute FIR filters tailored to the venue

With EASE Focus 3, system designers can simulate the acoustical performance of the complete sound system to find the optimal setup for a given venue with multiple audience areas, curved and inclining seating. Focus 3 assists the user with many intelligent features such as Auto Splay functions, Virtual EQ, and detailed analysis of sound coverage, SPL and frequency response.

Feature Overview

EASE Focus 3 is the universal tool for the simulation of loudspeaker systems. It is supported by nearly all major loudspeaker manufacturers and offers a comprehensive set of features from general design functions for venues and sound systems all the way to specialized tuning and optimization features.

  • Quickly enter a venue into EASE Focus 3 using differently shaped basic audience zones and define multiple audience areas within these. Areas can be placed at different heights and can have inclining seating. Geometry data can either be entered from an existing plan using regular X, Y, Z coordinates or by use of polar coordinates as derived from laser distance and inclinometers on site. Add additional vertical cutting planes to provide section views for extended evaluation.
  • Add sound systems from EASE Focus' encompassing database spanning more than 60 leading brands. EASE Focus 3 supports line arrays, configurable loudspeakers and columns, typical point sources, and subwoofer arrays. Each sound source can be tweaked and adjusted in placement, orientation, and electronic parameters such as gain, polarity, delay, and a virtual EQ. Up to 40 sound sources, even from different brands, are supported within one project. Nifty functions for stacking, snapping, moving, and copying make the setup of larger systems easy.
  • Watch EASE Focus immediately calculate the sound coverage on your audience zones and sections. Investigate the interaction between separate sound sources especially in the low and low-mid frequency range with the "Complex Summation" feature introduced with EASE Focus 3. All mappings now clearly show the influence of polarity, phase, and propagation delay of your systems on the audience areas. Adjust your settings and re-calculate in order to maximize SPL and minimize negative effects.
  • The “Complex Sum” calculation setting allows effective simulation and tuning of basically any arrangement of subwoofer arrays. Place and stack your loudspeakers freely or insert a pre-configured array. Then tune them to deliver the desired radiation pattern. While inserting a new sound source you may specifically add subwoofers as a subwoofer array. EASE Focus 3 treats such an array as a single sound source, offers different parameters to conveniently configure it, and automatically computes suggested delays.
  • Make use of many helpful features for pre-production and on-site setup. For instance, EASE Focus seamlessly integrates the AFMG FIRmaker Technology and offers a communication interface for data transfer to DSP platforms. A plug-in architecture for rigging safety calculations provides the opportunity for manufacturers to offer additional calculations beyond the acoustic realm. Extensive PDF reports can be exported and passed to your system technician for fast and flawless installation.

EASE Focus is based on AFMG's renowned EASE calculation engine. This provides high accuracy in the full frequency range from 20 Hz to 20 kHz due to the high internal data resolution and the GLL data format. Compatible data structures allow data exchange with EASE and other AFMG software packages. Fully configured line arrays can be exported for further use in EASE. Digitally steered columns and other configurable loudspeakers require an additional proprietary DLL that can provide beam steering filters and other manufacturer-specific settings.

EASE Focus currently supports German, English, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, and French languages.

Paragon Acoustic Consultants had been reviewing different room acoustics software packages to standardise the software used within the practice. Various room acoustic packages were considered, however, a number of the software packages considered proved unfavourable due to limitations of room geometries that can be modelled, limited calculation outputs and general concerns that the software was unnecessarily difficult to use for even straightforward tasks. This practice has reviewed Olive Tree Lab Suite and found the software to be user friendly whilst providing a very high level of functionality. Having rented the software and modelled a number of relatively complex room acoustic projects, we are impressed with the software and in particular the very professional back-up and support provided by P.E. Mediterranean Acoustics R&D. At this stage the modelling functions for outdoor sound have not been used, however, having watched demonstrations by Mediterranean Acoustics via computer link–up the external modelling sections of the software look as impressive as the room acoustics modelling.

The OTL Team is a delight to work with. Amazingly responsive to questions and requests, and constantly improving the product. When it comes to software development & support, many should look at this company as a model to follow.

I would like to appreciate the team of OTL and Premard in terms of their continued support and efforts. OTL has been such a valuable tool that I keep coming back for more. With the new software OTL 4 Pemard has again made an effective tool for Acousticians worldwide.

I have been using the OTL Lab application for a number of years, mainly for teaching and demonstrations at undergraduate and postgraduate courses in acoustics and noise control. The program is user-friendly and incorporates an advanced high-level 3D designer tool for setting up virtual acoustic environments, allowing easy setting up of case studies and extracting results and maps for radiation and transmission for noise and other sources.
I find very useful the advanced physics engine for sound propagation which allows for wave-based simulations (plane or spherical) considering also atmospheric refraction. This enables OTL to achieve accurate results especially in large scale setups encountered in environmental studies. The interface for immediate comparison of analytical results with standardized approximations (ISO standards) or simplified computational methods such as ray tracing and image-source models allows for comprehensive evaluations in multiple levels of physical detail. Such features which have been utilized by the members of our Audio and Acoustic Technology group during research projects.
The support by the OTL team was extremely helpful and their response immediate, tackling queries at personal level and providing educational webinars for the students.

Although designed for demanding Acoustics applications, Olive Tree Lab has been instrumental in my research and work. Despite its hugely detailed modeling of acoustic properties, primarily addressed to acousticians, through its intuitive interface, it has also proven invaluable for architectural design. Furthermore, the Mediterranean Acoustics team have vastly exceeded my expectations for 'after sales service' and provided a rare blend of scientific expertise and personal care – giving true meaning to the word 'support'.

We find OTL very intuitive and the customer service spectacular. Once the model was properly configured, the mapping software predicted very accurately and was within +/-5dB in comparison to actual field measurements.  We were able to provide client documents that were clear and intuitive and allowed them to prove compliance with local and state noise ordinances.

Pemard did a fantastic job with our custom software application. Costas and Panagiotis were extremely responsive during the development process and were always helpful in immediately addressing our concerns and fixing issues where we found them. The custom software the team developed for us has been of huge help to our room acoustics design process and we could not have done this without their help. I would recommend Pemard to anyone needing custom acoustics software.
