AFMG Reflex - For the design and application of diffusers

AFMG Reflex is a two-dimensional acoustics simulation software to model the reflection, diffusion, and scattering of a sound wave incident upon a defined geometrical structure.

Within AFMG Reflex the shape of the reflective surface is entered as a two-dimensional cross-section as would be seen from overhead looking down at the shape. Reflex assumes that this cross-sectional geometry extends infinitely in the third dimension, i.e. into and out of the computer monitor screen. The surface defined by this geometry is also assumed to be perfectly rigid. This means the surface is 100% reflective and does not in any way absorb sound or allow sound to be transmitted through it.

These assumptions are required for the mathematical approach that Reflex is using. It is based on the Boundary Element Method (BEM) to calculate the reflection, diffusion, and scattering properties of the surface. The reflective properties are displayed as a polar response graph for any angle of incidence and frequency of a sound wave. The scattering and diffusion coefficients are displayed as frequency response graphs.

The calculation of the scattering coefficients is based on the work of Mommertz, Vorländer, and ISO 17497-1. The calculation of the diffusion coefficients is according to Cox and D’Antonio and to the ISO 17497-2 standard which is currently in preparation.

License Versions

There are two versions of AFMG Reflex that can be licensed; a Basic version and a Standard version. The version purchased will determine the features that are available when using the software. The Standard version is not limited. It contains all of the programs features and functionality.

The Basic version has the following limitations:
  • Only one model can be loaded into the program at a time,
  • A maximum of 20 elements can be used in a model,
  • No export of data to an EASE material file.

Feature Overview

  • Easy and quick entry of the geometry of the diffuser or structured surface, by means of rectangular, triangular, sinusoidal and circular elementary shapes.
  • Numerous element editing functions including copy & paste, duplicate, flip and drag & drop.
  • Room outline view with loudspeakers and listener position.
  • Simultaneous examination of several diffuser models.
  • Spatial response plot for investigation of the reflected and scattered sound wave as a function of the angle of incidence and reflection.
  • Overlay functions for comparison of results at multiple frequencies, multiple angles or of multiple models.
  • Coefficients plot with scattering coefficient, diffusion coefficient and normalized diffusion coefficient.
  • Data smoothing functions.
  • Result output to a editable and printable format, such as RTF and PDF, as well as to various bitmap formats, such as BMP and PNG.
  • Scattering coefficients can be saved directly as EASE wall materials (MAT).

Paragon Acoustic Consultants had been reviewing different room acoustics software packages to standardise the software used within the practice. Various room acoustic packages were considered, however, a number of the software packages considered proved unfavourable due to limitations of room geometries that can be modelled, limited calculation outputs and general concerns that the software was unnecessarily difficult to use for even straightforward tasks. This practice has reviewed Olive Tree Lab Suite and found the software to be user friendly whilst providing a very high level of functionality. Having rented the software and modelled a number of relatively complex room acoustic projects, we are impressed with the software and in particular the very professional back-up and support provided by P.E. Mediterranean Acoustics R&D. At this stage the modelling functions for outdoor sound have not been used, however, having watched demonstrations by Mediterranean Acoustics via computer link–up the external modelling sections of the software look as impressive as the room acoustics modelling.

​I have been using the OTL Lab application for a number of years, mainly for teaching and demonstrations at undergraduate and postgraduate courses in acoustics and noise control. The program is user-friendly and incorporates an advanced high-level 3D designer tool for setting up virtual acoustic environments, allowing easy setting up of case studies and extracting results and maps for radiation and transmission for noise and other sources.
I find very useful the advanced physics engine for sound propagation which allows for wave-based simulations (plane or spherical) considering also atmospheric refraction. This enables OTL to achieve accurate results especially in large scale setups encountered in environmental studies. The interface for immediate comparison of analytical results with standardized approximations (ISO standards) or simplified computational methods such as ray tracing and image-source models allows for comprehensive evaluations in multiple levels of physical detail. Such features which have been utilized by the members of our Audio and Acoustic Technology group during research projects.
The support by the OTL team was extremely helpful and their response immediate, tackling queries at personal level and providing educational webinars for the students.

We find OTL very intuitive and the customer service spectacular.
