Welcome to Mediterranean Acoustics Research & Development Ltd. (PEMARD)

Mediterranean Acoustics Research & Development was established to do research in the various fields of Acoustics, with in mind to expand in the future to other scientific areas as well.


Based in Cyprus, an island in the eastern Mediterranean Sea, Mediterranean Acoustics is a small team of acousticians, software developers and external specialists who are dedicated in promoting science and technology. 


Mediterranean Acoustics was set up by Panos Economou, founder and Managing Director of Panacoustics Ltd - an Acoustics consultancy, which was established in Cyprus in 1982 specialising in Building Acoustics, Room Acoustics and Noise Control. Between 1990 and 1992, he was a Principal Engineer at the Noise and Vibration Department at WS Atkins Ltd (now Atkins), in Epsom, UK, in charge of Architectural Acoustics.


Panos Economou obtained a BSc (Hons) in Mechanical Engineering, at the Polytechnic of Central London, and then an MSc in Applied Acoustics at Chelsea College (University of London). He is a member of the Institute of Acoustics (IOA), the Acoustical Society of America (ASA), the Audio Engineering Society (AES), Hellenic Institute of Acoustics (HELINA), and the Cyprus Technical Chamber (ETEK).


He is also the General Secretary of the Nicolas Economou Foundation, a non-profit cultural organisation, for which he was responsible for organising all it’s musical events including an annual International 4-day international music festival. He is a drummer and has headed and participated in many local Jazz groups since 1986.


Mediterranean Acoustics is currently developing a suite of Acoustical software applications called “Olive Tree Lab” which will encompass Outdoor Sound Propagation, Building Acoustics, Room Acoustics, Mechanical Systems Noise Control, Hall & Theatre acoustical elements such as sound Reflectors and Diffusers. “Olive Tree Lab” offers users a virtual lab in which they could experiment and study the effects project parameters could have on the outcome of their design.


The first of the series in the “Olive Tree Lab” acoustics software suite is a unique, practical, accurate and precise Outdoor Sound Propagation prediction software with a special emphasis on Noise Barrier design based on state of the art methods.
